I thus decided to kickoff a 'Mini Longan Farming Project'. First of all, I collected several seeds which made it to my A-list of potentials (don't they resemble little bombs?):

Then I dug out the 'egg trays' which I bought from Daiso eons ago. (Interestingly, Daiso in Thailand is more expensive @ S$2.40 per item compared to S$2.00 in
Singapore. Hmmm... I have yet to figure out why):

At this juncture, I must say that I really miss Horti's Seed and Potting Mix that I usually use back in Singapore. It contains vermiculite and peat moss and always secures rather good germination rates. I intend to bring back several packs the next time I return to Singapore. Anyway Horti or not, in went the soil and the mini bombs:

Please return to Kiccoro's Garden again to check on the progress of this project... to be continued.
woah, never knew that an eggtray could fetch $2.40
ReplyDeleteHmm... looks like you will have a fruit orchard soon. You intend to grow other stuff like Lychees and all?
ReplyDeleteUnix:
They are not egg trays per se, but mini, peat based pots used for seed starting :)
nix: you so cute lah.... heehee..... but i understand, it's easy to be deceived by how it looks....
ReplyDeleteLevia: right now i already have a mature longan tree which has already flowered and borne fruit before.... then i have a mango tree, one seedless guava plant, another mini guava... passiflora....and my favourite variegated lime (plant looks stunning, fruit is juicy and fragrant, and somehow lime butterflies seem to avoid it... haha). You want the seeds?
Wow I can't wait to see your garden ! Sounds fantastic. Would love the seeds, you have a pic of the variegated lime ? Strange that the butterflies are giving it a miss, do you have the same lime butterfly as we have here ?
ReplyDeleteLevia, I will post a pic of my variegated lime plant soon. Yes, there is the same lime butterfly as what we have in SG. I have seen them fluttering around in my garden before. But somehow they seem to avoid the variegated lime, which I thought was quite incredulous since they are super avid egg layers on lime plants. Maybe they don't recognise the plant or the plant emits a different scent from the usual ones?
ReplyDeleteThis is strange. One possibility could be that the variegated plant simply does not secrete enough of the chemical that the butterfly considers attractive. I will not rule out if it could be by sight as well, or even both. If you have some of the green lime leaves, perhaps you could test the hypothesis by hanging a a few leaves placed in white muslin or cheesecloth onto the variegated lime and see whether the butterflies home in on them ?
ReplyDeleteLevia, my mum would smack me if I were to carry out the experiment and some butterflies REALLY do home there haha. She loves that plant and absolutely loathes those caterpillars.....
